Cable theft at Eden Gardens ahead of IPL clash

Posted by Cool Dude | 8:30 AM

It seems that Eden Gardens' bad days are far from over. After a power failure, unsporting pitch and water shortage during a match last week, the hallowed turf has earned negative publicity yet again with the discovery of a cable theft.

With just two days left for the Indian Premier League (IPL) match between home team Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians, the theft of altogether 500 m of power and telecom cable from three points of the stadium Saturday night comes as a big setback for the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).

A first information report (FIR) has been filed at the Maidan police station as the CAB cried conspiracy. Three hundred metres of power cable between the C and D blocks connecting the electronic scoreboard and hoardings on the boundary line were found missing, the police said. Another 200 m of cable between B and C blocks and the generator connection cable under gallery C were also stolen, said CAB president Prasun Mukherjee.

"I am shocked. Somebody who has good knowledge of the ground has done it. Otherwise how could the culprit avoid the CAB staff and policemen who have been on duty round the clock?" said Mukherjee."It clearly shows that some people are trying to jeopardise the matches," he added.

CAB treasurer Tushar Sarkar, however, assured that Tuesday's match would not be affected as the cables were replaced. "There will be no problem in the functioning of the light tower," he said.

Police Commissioner Goutam Mohan Chakraborty inspected the Eden in the evening, and said he was satisfied with the overall arrangements. Asked about the flood light arrangements, he said: "The problems that surfaced in the last match have been rectified. Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC) has taken the necessary steps. I am confident uninterrupted power can be supplied."Chakraborty was also surprised by the theft despite the presence of security personnel and added that the detective department will probe the matter. He also accused the organisers of trying to create an artificial demand for tickets.

"We heard and saw people were not getting tickets from the counter. Then we took up the matter with the organisers. They have been asked to brief us daily on the ticket sales," said Chakraborty, adding that the police department would be in charge of ticket sales in the remaining five IPL matches here.

The police chief said that apart from Kolkata team owners and film stars Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla, Mumbai Indians owner and industrialist Mukesh Ambani and actor Hrithik Roshan would be in the gallery Tuesday.

Chakraborty added he was not sure of a foolproof security and said: "I am worried. Some mischief makers are there. But we have to make proper arrangements. And we are working in that direction".Eden Gardens had hogged the limelight for all the wrong reasons right from its first match in the IPL, April 20, between Knight Riders and Deccan Chargers. The match was halted for 31 minutes after flood lights in two of the four towers went out.

“Sunset over the Atlas Mountains,” a circa 1935 oil painting by Winston Churchill went under hammer during Bonhams New York auction in 23 April. This is one painting that Winston adored so much that he invited President Franklin D. Roosevelt to see it even after years later. This vivacious countryside depicting Churchill’s balcony at the Mamounia Hotel in Marrakech was anticipated to fetch $600,000. Churchill invited Roosevelt to travel with him to Marrakech after a conference in Casablanca in 1943 so he could experience the beautiful view for himself.
The painting by Winston Churchill of a Moroccan sunset -- a view he loved so much that he invited President Franklin D. Roosevelt to see it -- has sold for $350,000 (220,000 euros). After Churchill's death in 1965, the oil painting went to a daughter, who sold it to a private collector in Texas. The collector sold it in 1992 to the family of the San Francisco owner who auctioned it Wednesday.

Churchill, who began painting for relaxation and loved working in brilliant colors, often did not sign his work, including "Sunset," so as not to influence judges, Bonhams European paintings specialist Malcolm Walker said. "He was as good as an amateur artist will get," Walker said before the sale. A 1948 Churchill painting, "Marrakech," depicting the city's gates against the backdrop of the Atlas mountains, sold at auction for about $950,000 (596,000 euros) in December 2007. Earlier that year, his painting "Chartwell Landscape with Sheep" sold for $2.06 million (1.29 million euros), a record for him.

Victoria Portrait Series
The first set of British India notes were the 'Victoria Portrait' Series issued in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 1000. These were unifaced, carried two language panels and were printed on hand-moulded paper manufactured at the Laverstock Paper Mills (Portals). The security features incorporated the watermark (GOVERNMENT OF INDIA, RUPEES, two signatures and wavy lines), the printed signature and the registration of the viceroy.

rupees 10 rupees 100
British India Notes facilitated inter-spatial transfer of funds. As a security precaution, notes were cut in half. One set was sent by post. On confirmation of receipt, the other half was despatched by post.
Half Note
This series remained largely unchanged till the introduction of the 'King's Portrait' series which commenced in 1923.

Small Denomination Notes!
The introduction of small denomination notes in India was essentially in the realm of the exigent. Compulsions of the first World War led to the introduction of paper currency of small denominations. Rupee One was introduced on 30th November, 1917 followed by the exotic Rupees Two and Annas Eight. The issuance of these notes was discontinued on 1st January, 1926 on cost benefit considerations. These notes first carried the portrait of King George V and were the precursors of the 'King's Portrait' Series which were to follow.

King's Portrait Series

Government of India continued to issue currency notes till 1935 when the Reserve Bank of India took over the functions of the Controller of Currency. These notes were issued in denominations of Rs 5, 10, 50, 100, 500, 1000, 10,000.

World's Five Most Valuable Diamonds

Posted by Cool Dude | 4:03 PM

Golden Jubilee Diamond
At 545.7 carats, this is the largest cut diamond in the world. Graded as a ‘fancy yellow-brown’ colour, it was presented to the King of Thailand in 1997 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of his coronation. Thailand was experiencing economic difficulties at the time so, to avoid accusations of extravagance, the government referred to this stone as a large ‘golden topaz’.

Cullinan II (aka The Lesser Star of Africa)
Weighing 317.4 carats, this is the third largest polished diamond in the world. It was cut from the Cullinan diamond, the largest rough diamond ever found, which was discovered in South Africa in 1905. It is now part of the British crown jewels, forming part of the Imperial State Crown.

The Millenium Star
In 2000, De Beers and the Steinmetze Group put the ‘Millenium Star’ on display at the Millennium Dome in London. Within months, this 203.4 carat, flawless D-colour diamond was the target of a daring attempted robbery. Police seized the villains, which is lucky since the diamond had an insured value of no less than one hundred million pounds (USD 205,000,000). This valuation may well be an under-estimate.
The Star of the Season
In May 1995, a 100.1 carat pear-shaped diamond went on sale in Switzerland. The stone was free of internal flaws, and its colour was graded ‘D’, or perfect white. It was bought by Sheikh Ahmed Fitaihi for a world record sixteen and a half million dollars (£8,073,000).

Cullinan I (aka The Great Star of Africa)
Discovered in South Africa in 1905, The Great Star of Africa is the largest polished stone to be cut from the legendary Cullinan Diamond. Weighing 530.2 carats, it is now on display in the Tower of London, where it is mounted in the Crown Jewels at the head of the sceptre. It is literally impossible to put a value on it.
